Promoting free, fair, transparent, and professionally managed elections throughout Africa

About us

The Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) is a collaborative platform  that brings together Election Management Bodies (EMBs) from across Africa to promote cooperation, professionalism, and excellence in electoral administration. Established by African election authorities, while fully respecting the independence of each member institution, the Association is inspired by the principles of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance and by a shared commitment to creating, expanding, strengthening, and sustaining democratic order across the continent.

The AAEA envisions an Africa where democratic institutions are strong, electoral processes are credible and inclusive, and citizens are able to exercise their right to participate in free, fair, transparent, and peaceful elections. The Association recognizes that the electoral process and the periodic conduct of free and fair elections are fundamental to the development of democratic culture, the consolidation of democratic systems, and the realization of the democratic ideals enshrined in international and regional human rights instruments.

Committed to promoting democracy as a system of responsible and accountable governance, the AAEA works to strengthen the capacity of EMBs to administer elections with professionalism, impartiality, integrity, and efficiency. Through peer learning, technical assistance, knowledge-sharing, and the exchange of resources, expertise, and technologies, the Association supports its members in improving electoral administration and building public confidence in democratic processes.

The AAEA was founded in recognition of the challenges faced by African institutions responsible for the administration, supervision, conduct, and observation of elections, and of the need for concerted action to safeguard democratic processes and reduce their vulnerability. As a peer-exchange forum, it facilitates close cooperation, consultation, and the development of linkages among EMBs, enabling members to share experiences, address common challenges, and advance best practices in election management.

The Association also serves as a support system for election authorities and their leadership in times of need, while amplifying the collective voice of African EMBs on issues related to elections, democracy, and good governance at both continental and global levels.

As a non-partisan and independent network of election authorities, the AAEA is mandated to provide a peer-to-peer forum dedicated to the promotion and institutionalization of professional election management in Africa. It pursues this mandate through regional and continental exchanges among election officials and experts, standard-setting initiatives, capacity development, technological and information transfer, resource-sharing, and advocacy. By fostering cooperation among its members and strengthening electoral institutions, the AAEA contributes to addressing the challenges of democratization and to safeguarding a vibrant democratic culture throughout Africa.
