The Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) envisions Africa as a model of democracy, where all electoral processes respect, guarantee, and uphold citizens’ right to free, fair, and peaceful elections. To realize this vision, the AAEA seeks to serve as a collaborative platform for African election management bodies (EMBs), encouraging peer learning, sharing information and resources, and providing technical support. Through these efforts, the AAEA aims to empower EMBs to manage elections in their countries with professionalism, fairness, and cost-effectiveness. The Association is committed to promoting mutual learning, sharing information and resources, setting standards, and providing technical assistance to election management bodies across Africa. It strives to strengthen the capacity of its members to organize free and fair elections in their countries, to ensure mutual accountability for best practices in election management, and to advocate for a strong and influential global voice on electoral issues.
The AAEA serves as a peer-exchange forum that harnesses the knowledge and resources of EMBs to make them available to their counterparts. The AAEA also provides a support system to the heads of EMBs in times of need, including resource-sharing and the transfer of technologies and information. In addition, the AAEA amplifies the influence, voice, and relevance of EMB leaders in the field of elections, good governance, and democracy in Africa and worldwide.
The mandate of the AAEA is to provide a non-partisan, peer-to-peer forum, independent of national governments, for the promotion and institutionalization of the professional nature of African election authorities. The AAEA is expected to pursue this mandate through regional exchanges across election officials and experts, standard setting, technological and information transfer, and resource-sharing.
